Sad story? For the second time since living in Guatemala, someone has stolen our credit card numbers (not the card) and attempted to make charges on it. The first time, they spent $1,200 at a travel agency in Solala, Guatemala (who does that? "Hi, I'd like to buy these $1,000+ plane tickets, but I don't have my credit card, so here are some numbers you can type in...") and the second time was an attempted $4.26 at the 4 Queens Hotel in New York. The funny part? When they tried to charge the $4.26, by manually entering the numbers, the transaction was denied for insufficient funds! Ha! Take that robbers!
Now you might be thinking, "Well, that's sad too because you and Nate didn't have even $4.26 in your bank account." But don't worry, we do, thankfully we keep a bare minimum in our checking and the rest in savings accounts and under the mattress.
So the happy part of both of our credit card number thefts is that we, personally, weren't held accountable for any of that money, but the disappointing part is that it happens more frequently than one would hope, and it won't get any less frequent as we use less cash and more cards.
